Differentiating Between Acrylic & Silicone Interface Pads
Thermal conductive pads provide an excellent way to transfer heat from hot surfaces within a device to areas that maintain a cooler operating temperature.
Acrylic thermal management materials are a preferred solution for electronic applications. Acrylic TIM’s by 3M do not contain silicone oils which bleed throughout the electronic components which can cause many problems including corrosion of electrical connections. Acrylic thermal material from 3M is low outgassing, unlike silicone pads, and provides excellent dielectric qualities as well.
Acrylic thermal solutions from 3M provide outstanding conformability and gap filling properties that allow for easy and controlled heat flow from one area of the device to another. Acrylic thermally conductive material also provide advanced environmental durability and can provide operative heat transfer performance up to 130° C. Acrylic pads offer a lower cost option, when compared to the equivalent silicone thermal pad..
Conversely, silicone interface pads can provide excellent heat durability with the ability to withstand temperatures up to 200C. However, in an electronic application that temperature range is generally unnecessary. Silicone thermal pads are an excellent option for industrial, rugged high temperature solutions. And when heat is applied, silicone thermal pads can be extremely soft for conformability challenges.
Before installing a silicone interface pad, the installation area should be clean and dry to ensure the best possible thermal performance. For the cleanest possible surface isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) should be applied with a lint-free wipe or swab, which will remove any surface contamination such as dust or fingerprints. Furthermore, the silicone thermal pads should be installed in temperatures ranging from 0° to 40° C for improved adhesion.
