Thermal Conductive Tape Adhesion Process


Before installing any style of 3M thermal conductive tape, the installation area should be clean and dry to ensure optimal thermal performance. For the cleanest possible surface, isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) should be applied with a lint-free wipe or swab, which will remove any surface contamination such as dust or fingerprints. The use of glass cleaners or other oily denatured alcohol products is not recommended. However, more powerful solvents such as acetone, MEK or toluene may be necessary to remove dingy or higher contaminated areas. Furthermore, the thermal conductive tape should be installed in temperatures ranging from 0° to 40° C for improved adhesion.
 
The thermal conductive tape should then be firmly attached to the application with the use of a squeegee or enhanced finger pressure to ensure that all the air escapes and a strong bound is formed. The substrates can then be attached and bonded through compression to allow for the appropriate wetting of the substrate surfaces.
